Why Plate Rolling?
Plate Rolling for Lombard
Because sometimes applications require the use of sheets of metal to be rolled into a round or conical shape, which is achieved by plate rolling.
The process requires a plate rolling machine. Where an operator takes a sheet of metal and runs it through the machine to achieve the required bend. If the shape needs to be a cylinder, the process is finished by welding the seam.
A variety of industries and applications use rolling to achieve specific shapes in a single, continuous piece. Industries like construction, manufacturing, and shipbuilding often use this technique to create pipes, tanks, and other cylindrical structures. Different metals like steel, copper, and aluminum are used depending on the application.
Plate rolling offers versatility and the capability of shaping plates that are difficult to achieve with other forming techniques. Making pieces that are not only more functional but also can be aesthetically pleasing to a building while holding a strong structural integrity.
There are three stages to the plate rolling process:
- Pre-Rolling—The edges of the plate are slightly bent upwards to ensure they remain parallel throughout the process, preventing distortion or buckling
- Rolling—This is the main part of the process where the plate is fed through the rollers to create the desired shape. Specific adjustments are made to the rollers that apply precise pressure to the plate
Post Rolling—The plate is run in the opposite direction through the rollers to ensure the plate is perfectly cylindrical and that the edges are straight
