How Does MIG Welding Work?

MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding is a process where an electrical current is used to create an arc between an electrode wire and the workpiece. This arc melts the wire that is deposited to create the actual weld.

Once you remove the torch and let it cool, the joined metals solidify and form the new piece of metal, which is the weld.

Components

MIG welding equipment comprises a collection of components that enable the creation of strong welds. Some components include:

Power Source

This is the heart of the equipment. The power source generates the electrical current that creates the welding arc between the welding gun and the workpiece.

Wire Feeder

The wire feeder provides continuous wire during the welding operation. The welding machine controls the wire feeder, and the welder can adjust its speed to suit their needs.

Welding Gun

Probably the most well-known piece of welding equipment. This is what the welder holds to create the welds. It works by using a trigger that activates the feeding of the welding wire and creates the arc when in range of the workpiece.

Shielding Gas

Part of the welding process includes the constant flow of shielding gas. The nozzle delivers this shielding gas, protecting the weld from contamination. The two main gases used in MIG welding are pure Argon and an Argon/Carbon Dioxide mix.

Ground Cable

The ground cable attaches to the workpiece and completes the circuit required for MIG welding. It connects the machine to the metal being welded.
