What is Laser Cutting?
Laser cutting is as straightforward as it sounds. It is a focused, high-powered laser beam used to mark, cut, or engrave.
This manufacturing technique allows for the creation of intricate components with high precision. The laser is controlled by a CNC machine, which directs the arm to perform cuts. Which allows for accurate, nearly flawless parts.
How does Laser Cutting Work?
CNC controlled lasers operate like other CNC machines but vary in some factors.
For instance, a CNC Laser does not have direct contact with the material. It is a thermal process where a laser head focuses the beam and cuts the workpiece to a desired shape.
The controlling computer provides almost limitless potential. With the right designs programmed into the machine. It can produce complex shapes for special applications or quickly produce a multitude of common components.
However, a laser is capable of more than just cutting. By controlling the power of the laser, workpieces can be cleaned, scored, and engraved. It allows for both cutting and engraving a plate with a custom design.

What is a Laser Cutting Machine?
A CNC laser is a manufacturing machine that uses a focused light through a lens and nozzle to cut materials into a desired shape. Three of the most commonly used lasers include:
CNC CO2 Laser
This type of machine uses a carbon dioxide laser as the active medium. Because of their efficiency and high-power output, they are the most common type of laser used.
They are ideal for cutting sharp angles, fine features in sheet metal or metal thinner than 10mm.
CNC Fiber Laser
Newer than CO2, these lasers focus the beam through a fiber optic cable through a bank of diodes. Which allows for faster, cleaner cuts.
Their capability makes them ideally suited for materials thinner than 5mm.
CNC Crystal Laser
With the use of crystals, these machines generate high-intensity lasers that are stronger than CO2 lasers. Which makes them capable of cutting through thicker metals.
These lasers have a broad range of material compatibility. Like glass, wood, and plastics.
What Materials can be Laser Cut?
Many materials can be used for laser cutting. Project requirements dictate the material and type of laser needed. With a CNC laser, there are countless options for cutting and engraving.
A CNC laser can shape materials, including:
Metals
All kinds of metals, including mild steel, stainless steel, and non-ferrous metals. Reflective metals like aluminum are more difficult to cut and require the use of fiber lasers.
Woods
Woods like plywood and MDF are suitable for cutting. But resins or oils need to be taken into consideration to avoid fires.
Cardboard & Paper
Laser cutting is one of the major ways to create intricate patterns used in things like wedding invitations.
Plastics
Among materials able to be laser-cut, we can include plastic. Laser-cutting melts the edges of plastic, giving them a polished and great finish.
Glass
Glass would seem like a problem material because of its fragility and reflective properties. But the right laser can cut glass into shapes just like any other material.
