What is Arc Welding?

The process of Arc welding comprises the use of heat from an electrical arc to melt metals and join them together. Where an electrode is held close to the workpiece that has an electrical voltage applied to it. An arc is created between the electrode and metal, generating an intense heat that melts the metals together.

Arc Welding in Chicago - Stick Welding

Types of Arc Welding

Shielded Metal Arc (Stick Welding)

Stick welding uses a flux-coated consumable electrode seated in a holder, and melts into the weld pool, fusing the materials together.

This type of welding is popular because it is less expensive but yields slower results.

Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG or MAG)

In MIG (Metal Inert Gas) or MAG (Metal Active Gas) welding, a welding gun is continuously fed a consumable electrode wire, which melts and fuses with the base materials in the weld pool. A shielding gas protects the process to prevent weld contamination.

Benefits of this type of welding include versatility and automation options.

Gast Tungsten Arc (TIG)

TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding is like MIG welding, but uses a non-consumable electrode and optional filler material. This process can weld thinner materials but requires more experience.

TIG welding is versatile and effective in welding aluminum, stainless steel, and a variety of alloys.

Plasma Arc (PAW)

Plasma arc welding is a process where a plasma torch is used to join metal pieces. It offers greater precision and penetration than TIG welding. Which makes it more suitable for materials varying in thickness. Because of its high operating temperatures, the process requires water-cooling to prevent nozzle damage.

While it requires more experience, this type of welding is ideal for high-speed welding.

Benefits of Using Arc Welding

Versatility

Arc welding is adaptable to a variety of applications and can weld a wide range of metal thicknesses.

Productivity

With the right experience and equipment, arc welding efficiently yields high-quality welds. Which is perfectly suited for high-volume production.

Material Compatibility

Arc welding can join a variety of metals and thicknesses. Depending on the type of joint and material, there are options for optimal results.
